The Spiral also called the “Flower of Life”. The soul as being a bridge between your mind and the intangible(real) essence of your spirit, and that it is gently guiding your mind through a doorway of transcendence to a higher plane of awareness. By bringing the flower of life to words and pictures it can spiral your consciousness to a realization greater than itself.

“The spiral can be explained through mathematics – the pattern is a result of complex sequences algorithms which nature utilizes in her designs of the Universe. Spiral can be seen in every aspect of nature. We see them in vast galaxies, physical forces which shapes the Earth, the tides of oceans, the winds, the tornado s, structures of DNA, seashells, design of buildings and
auto-parts, music, light and …..Within life itself.”

The artistic aspect of life struck her natural instinct by way of her obsession with painting and dancing in the formative years of her childhood. The cultural environment of Springdale’s School in Delhi nurtured her talent further. She joined the College of Art, New Delhi in 1993 for her BFA degree in painting. The aesthetic environment of the college helped her realize her dream at a professional level. She also further honed her skills in Indian classical dance by completing her Sangeet Bhaskar in Indian classical dance (Kathak), and has several dance performances to her credit.

Nupur Kundu’s paintings are aesthetically pleasing to the eye. The vibrant colours are always balanced, never out of proportion. At a deeper level, her works take you into an unknown labyrinth you don’t quite know how to get into , the labyrinth is not intimidating nevertheless. The works can be seen as explorations of the human psyche – the complex web of thought processes, actions, reactions governing the psyche. It is like undertaking a visual exploration of the human psyche. Nupur has participated in several exhibitions both in India and abroad. While participating in this activity few years, he got educated immensely. There came freeness in handling water colors and he got fairly acquainted with medium and it certainly reflected in his painting. From 2011 to till date, he has independently teaching basic and advance watercolour painting to his students at his studio. His students include a whole range of people from doctors to architects to IT professionals , amateur painters, house wives and art students. While learning painting in his class as they look, it is great stress buster or sort of meditation. While depicting nature, the play of light and shadow is his forte, bright lively, vibrant colors is a signature style of his paintings. Vilas says, “once the paper gets mounted on essale, water, brushes and colours are around, my journey starts in the village scapes of costal area in India. Traditional clustered houses in konkan, the beaches, bullock-carts, old wadas are all symbolic of the rich culture and natural resources of our country. I walk through the brightness and shadows with my colours on the dusty roads, slant roofed houses and upright coconut trees …the fantastic game of light and shadow demonstrated by nature always fascinates me. Shades of Green pull me into the nature and I get dissolved slowly into that”. Companies like Thermax, Persistent, Institutions like Symbiosis, have organized his day long workshop for their employees, students. Corporate giants like Tata Motors have invited him to inaugurate the cultural functions and to preside over as a jury for employees’ drawing competition.

His demonstrations of landscapes in watercolour are also very popular. He has published his first book how to paint watercolour landscape step by step, titled ‘10 Landscapes step by step’. We can say, he is a natural teacher and like to share the joy of painting. To date, besides seven solo exhibitions he has participated in many group shows in Pune, Mumbai, Dubai, Singapore and France. Some of his paintings are in collection with art lovers in India and abroad. Along with Mr. Mulick he had workshop in Dubai also.

He was invited as Exceptional Guest for Biennale 2014, in Rochemaure, France in July. He had conducted 2 watercolour workshops, 3 watercolour landscape demonstration and exhibits his 27 Achievement watercolour :landscapes in exhibition with 28 other artists invited from 8 different countries. He was the only artist invited from India.

His recent works on “SPIRALS” have gained a lot of prominence in the art world. He syas, “In my views…… Spiral is not a form but a Journey of Developing my own Language. Language of Communication…… Language of Worship……. And of course Language of Science and Logics. Basically spirals comes from Sufism, “Raqs” do this type of worship which has four different stages in which there is movement of dance in spiral forms. When we speak about the movement, the classification for this could be generation of energy in our body, This all energies floats in nature in form of our five elements i.e.Earth,Water,Fire,Wind and Sky. Even the great poet and writer like Khalil Gibran,Rumi,Bulleshah also mentioned this truth in their poetries and write-up.The colors of my paintings directly come from these five mighty elements, that’s why most of my paintings are in bright colors like Red,Yellow,Blue Green ……..The addition of metallic colors like Gold and Silve reflects the presence of THE ALMIGHTY energy which is always present in every one and everywhere. Spirals also have scientific logic, which is very close to its mythological meanings. Physicist, Paul Dirac bagged Nobel award for “Theory of Spirals/Strings”. According to the theory, even a smallest particle electron is also made up of spirals, usually which look like a dot. It means there is a movement in each and every thing in our surroundings and all these things are full of energy, and I am trying to restore this energy in my canvas in the form of “S P I R A L S ……

College of Art & Crafts, Bhubaneshwar, in 1995.

He tries to set up a dialogue between the images and their private associations in his paintings. He tries to raise his paintings above an exercise in mere technical and skillful competency. Though there is disparity in his choice of subjects, his paintings can visually be grouped together, as they naturally bond by a similarity in theme, concept, execution and attitude. His figures speak directly and forcefully, and keep the viewers absorbed. His dialect is local, but its interpretative language makes it valid in a global multilingualism. He discovers his own self in the multiplication of images, and give it a metaphorical sensibility.

He has many solo shows to his credit, and his work is in many private collections in India and abroad.
